Nearly half of that take, $220 million, was from ticket sales domestically. That domestic take makes The Last Jedi the biggest opener of all of 2017 and the second highest opening weekend of all time after the franchise’s initial returning installment, The Force Awakens, which earned $247.9 million when it debuted you in 2015.

Despite vocal negative online feedback from some sections of Star Wars fandom, The Last Jedi earned an A from CinemaScore in a poll of moviegoers exiting screenings of the film on Friday evening. A string rating like this suggests that the film will have legs at the box office, though the fact that it is a Star Wars film will probably have a lot to do with it as well.

Coming in at a distant second place was 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ animated children’s film Ferdinand with $13.3 million.
