\"\"Oh, Warner Brothers. I think you’re cursed. And the latest announcement pertaining\u00a0The New Gods\u00a0<\/strong>pretty much seals it.<\/p>\n

Deadline<\/a> broke the news that\u00a0A Wrinkle in Time\u00a0<\/strong>director Ava DuVernay is close to signing on to direct\u00a0The New Gods<\/strong> for Warners.<\/p>\n

I imagine that Warner’s timed this announcement to cash in on what they thought would be the scoop of the director of the then-number one movie in the land joining the DCEU. Instead, A Wrinkle in Time <\/strong>barely scraped together $33 million, debuting at position #2 at the box office. Ouch.<\/p>\n

The New Gods were created by the legendary Jack Kirby when he arrived at DC Comics after leaving Marvel. They were a group of deities that sprung up after the “Old Gods” were killed off in Ragnarok. The good gods, led by the Odin-like Highfather,\u00a0 lived on the idyllic New Genesis and the evil gods, led by the nefarious Darkseid, lived on the hell-like planet called Apokolips. Fighting ensued. They also spilled out into such titles as The Forever People and Mister Miracle, so I’m sure Warners is thinking of a mini-franchise within the larger shared universe.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, DuVernay might be the most knowledgeable director to work on the project, if her answer to last year’s question as to what her favorite super was is any indication;<\/p>\n

Big Barda, in case you hadn’t guessed, is one of the characters from the New Gods.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0A Wrinkle in Time\u00a0<\/strong>shows us what we will be getting: a take on a much beloved yet complex sci-fi concept that will be visually brilliant yet lacking in cohesiveness, clarity or characterization.<\/p>\n
