The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the twenty-films have been submitted and provisionally qualify for nomination in the Best Animated Feature category of this year\u2019s Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

Eligible titles this year include such box office hits as The Incredibles 2<\/strong> to critical darlings like Isle Of Dogs<\/strong> to limited release foreign fare such as Fireworks<\/strong> (Japan) and On Happiness Road<\/strong> (Taiwan).<\/p>\n

According to Academy rules, if more than fifteen films are submitted and eligible, the Academy will nominate five for final Oscar voting. If less than fifteen films are eligible than there will only be three nominees in the category. The last time only three films were nominated in the category was in 2010.<\/p>\n

As of now, not all films \u2013 such as Sony\u2019s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse<\/strong> which opens December 14 – have fulfilled their required Los Angeles public screening run.<\/p>\n

Films submitted for the Best Animated Feature category are still eligible for nomination in other categories. However, critics have often charged that the existence Animated Feature category reduces the likelihood of animated films being nominated in the main Best Picture category. Since the Best Animated Feature category was instituted in 2001, only two films \u2013 Up<\/strong> (2009) and Toy Story 3<\/strong> (2010) \u2013 have received Best Picture nominations. Both films would also be nominated in the Best Animated feature category, where they would win an Oscar.<\/p>\n

Previously, 1991\u2019s Beauty And The Beast<\/strong> was the only animated film to have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category.<\/p>\n

Nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 22, 2019 with the Academy Awards being presented on February 24, 2019.<\/p>\n
