The story of friendship between an African-American musician and his Italian American driver in the segregated south of the 1950s took home a trio of statues including Best Picture Musical or Comedy, Screenplay and Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.

The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and is the only non-Guild award ceremony that spans both television and film.

Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic about iconic rock band Queen, took home two Golden Globes for Best Picture Drama and Best Actor in a Drama for Rami Malek’s performance as the band’s flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury. Netflix’s Roma took home two statues for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director.

Surprisingly, Vice, director Adam McKay’s scathing look at the life of Vice President Dick Cheney, won in only one of the six categories it was nominated in and it was star Christian Bale taking the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.

The two films that had received five nominations each – Blackkklansman and A Star Is Born – fared poorly. Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman was completely shut out, while Star Is Born only took home the award for Best Original Song.

Cable networks and streaming services dominated the television side of the awards, with not one network show that was nominated winning their category. Over-the-air networks had been losing considerable ground at the Globes over the years, with only one traditional network show winning any television category during any of the past six years’ worth of ceremonies.

Going into tonight’s ceremonies, the FX cable network series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story was the nomination leader with four categories. The show would win two – Best Drama Limited Series and Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series for star Darren Criss. Netflix’s The Kominsky Method also won two awards – Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for Michael Douglas’s work.

Here is the
