Tales of growing up in Mexico City and of political intrigue in the court of Queen Victoria were the big winners this morning as director Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n’s Roma<\/strong> and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite<\/strong> each received ten nods in this morning’s announcement of the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

Cuar\u00f3n’s Roma<\/strong> also managed the rather rare feat of being nominated in both the Best Picture and Best Foreign Language film categories. The last time that happened was in 2013 when Michael Haneke’s Amour<\/strong> had similar dual nominations. Only three other films in the Academy’s nine decade history have managed to do so as well – Costa Gravas’ Z<\/strong> in 1969, Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon<\/strong> in 2000 and Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful<\/strong> in 1998. All four previous dual nominees would win the Best Foreign Language Film category but not in Best Picture.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Best Picture category, Roma<\/strong> and The Favourite<\/strong> will also be dueling it out in the Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography categories.<\/p>\n

Vice<\/strong>, a look at former Vice-President Dick Cheney, and the last iteration of A Star Is Born<\/strong>, each received eight nominations a piece including sharing spot in the Best Picture category. Additionally Vice<\/strong>‘s Sam Rockwell and A Star Is Born<\/strong>‘s Sam Elliott are both nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category. Surprisingly, A Star Is Born<\/strong>‘s first time director Bradley Cooper was shut out of the Best Director category.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest hits of the year, Black Panther, has seven nominations including Best Picture, the first time that a comic book film has ever been nominated in the category. Additionally, Black Panther<\/strong>‘s Hannah Beachler is the first African-American to be nominated in the Production Design category.<\/p>\n

But it was also a strong year for African-American cinema over all as the large number of nominations received by Blackkklansman<\/strong> (6), Black Panther<\/strong> and If Beale Street Could Talk<\/strong> (3) attest to.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, after receiving some crossover appeal to mainstream audiences both Won’t You Be My Neighbor<\/strong> and Three Identical Strangers<\/strong> were locked out of the Best Documentary category.<\/p>\n
