The first Tank Girl story appeared in the debut issue of British comics anthology Deadline in 1988 and continued through to the publication’s ending in 1995. Dark Horse Comics picked up the initial reprint rights to the strip in 1991. Since then, collected volumes of the series have continued to sell to new readers.

Robbie established her production company LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014 as a way of developing female-centric projects for herself and other actresses. It is unclear if Tank Girl has been optioned as a starring vehicle for Robbie or if she will only take on a producer role for the film.

Tank Girl hit the big screen once before, in the self-titled 1995 film from Rachel Talalay, with Lori Petty starring.
