{"id":47029,"date":"2019-12-11T14:42:48","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T19:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/?p=47029"},"modified":"2020-01-04T13:16:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T18:16:27","slug":"national-film-registry-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/2019\/12\/11\/national-film-registry-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"National Film Registry Adds Record 7 Films From Female Directors, CLERKS, PURPLE RAIN And More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/elaine-may.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47032\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/elaine-may.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/elaine-may.jpg 678w, https:\/\/www.filmbuffonline.com\/FBOLNewsreel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/elaine-may-339x170.jpg 339w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nTwenty-five films, ranging over more than a century of cinema from the 1903 two-minute long actuality Emigrants Landing at Ellis Island to the 2003 documentary <strong>The Fog Of War<\/strong>, have been named as this year&#8217;s inductees onto the Library of Congress\u2019s National Film register.<\/p>\n<p>Other films included in this year\u2019s class are <strong>Gaslight<\/strong> (1944), which netted Ingrid Bergman her first Oscar, <strong>Old Yeller<\/strong> (1957), the Disney animated classic <strong>Sleeping Beauty<\/strong> (1959), multiple Academy Award Nominees such as <strong>Coal Miner&#8217;s Daughter<\/strong> (1980), <strong>Amadeus<\/strong> (1984) and <strong>Platoon<\/strong> (1986), Prince&#8217;s pop culture sensation <strong>Purple Rain<\/strong> (1984) and indie fare such as Spike Lee&#8217;s <strong>She&#8217;s Gotta Have It<\/strong> (1986) and Kevin Smith&#8217;s <strong>Clerks<\/strong> (1994).<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s films include four documentaries \u2013 <strong>I Am Somebody<\/strong> (1970), <strong>The Last Waltz<\/strong> (1978), <strong>Before Stonewall<\/strong> (1984) and <strong>The Fog Of War<\/strong>. Additionally, the list features a record seven films by women directors &#8211; Patricia Cardos&#8217; Real Women Have Curves (2002), Kimberly Peirce\u2019s Oscar winner <strong>Boys Don&#8217;t Cry<\/strong> (1999), Greta Schiller&#8217;s <strong>Before Stonewall<\/strong>, Claudia Weill&#8217;s <strong>Girlfriends<\/strong> (1978), Elaine May&#8217;s <strong>A New Leaf<\/strong> (1971), Madeline Anderson&#8217;s <strong>I Am Somebody<\/strong> and Gunvor Nelson&#8217;s avant-garde <strong>My Name Is Oona<\/strong> (1969).<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso&#8217;s inclusion marks the first time a film by a Latina director has been named to the Registry. Her work, as well as the inclusion of Lee&#8217;s <strong>She&#8217;s Got To Have It<\/strong> and Smith&#8217;s <strong>Clerks<\/strong> highlight that era&#8217;s emerging independent film movement as a place where non-traditional stories and voices were starting to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>The Library of Congress names 25 films annually to the National Film Registry as per the dictates of the National Film preservation Act. The purpose is to build a collection of film that is considered &#8220;culturally, historically or aesthetically&#8221; significant. Previous films named to the Registry range from <strong>Star Wars<\/strong> to the 8mm color motion picture footage shot by Abraham Zapruder of the assassination of President John F Kennedy.
