The Writers Guild of America announced the nominees in the three motion picture-related categories of their annual awards today. While many of the screenplays, such as those for The Irishman<\/strong> and Marriage Story<\/strong>, that made the list were expected, there were a few unexpected, but not unwelcome names announced as well.<\/p>\n

In a welcome surprise, both the comedy Booksmart<\/strong>, written by Emily Halpern & Sarah Haskins and Susanna Fogel and Katie Silberman, and Little Women<\/strong>, adapted by Greta Gerwig from the Louisa May Alcott novel, scored nominations in their respective categories. Both films garnered strong reviews, but have done only lukewarm box office and have not set the awards season on fire. Nominations here could help their chances for more such recognition moving forward.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the documentary category, documentarian workhorse Alex Gibney scored two nominations \u2013 one for Citizen K<\/strong> and one for The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Writers Guild Awards will be announced on February 1.<\/p>\n
