The Doctor may have bid farewell to two of her three traveling companions at the end of today’s New Year’s Day Doctor Who<\/em> special, but she will be gaining a new companion in the form of footballer-turned-actor and comic John Bishop.<\/p>\n

The announcement came after the end credits on today’s special episode, “Revolution Of The Daleks.” You can see he video below.<\/p>\n

Bishop’s character, only credited as “Dan” for right now, will be joining the time and space traveler known only as the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her companion Yaz (Mandip Gill) when the thirteenth series of the revised British classic airs presumably towards the end of this year. He’ll be replacing the departing Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole, whose characters elected to stay behind on Earth instead of gallivanting across the universe righting wrongs and fighting evil aliens. instead, it seems as if their characters Graham and Ryan will continue that work here on just this planet.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Doctor Who<\/em> showruner Chris Chibnall stated – <\/p>\n

It’s time for the next chapter of Doctor Who, and it starts with a man called Dan. Oh, we’ve had to keep this one secret for a long, long time. Our conversations started with John even before the pandemic hit. The character of Dan was built for him, and it’s a joy to have him aboard the TARDIS.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Bishop started off as a footballer playing for Hyde FC and Southport FC. He switched over to standup comedy in 1980 and soon became a mainstay on such panel shows 8 Out Of 10 Cats<\/em>, Have I Got News For You<\/em> and Mock The Week<\/em>, all of which satirize current events.As a na ctor he has appeared on such British dramas as Skins<\/em> and Fearless<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Production on the new season of Doctor Who<\/em> began this past November. No air date for the new series has been announced.<\/p>\n
