Promising Young Woman<\/strong> and Borat Subsequent MovieFilm<\/strong> were the two big winners in the main film categories at this evenings Writers Guild of America awards. <\/p>\n

Promising Young Woman<\/strong>, written by the film’s director Emerald Fenning, took home the trophy for Best Original Screenplay. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm<\/strong> nabbed top honors in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.<\/p>\n

Mark Monroe and Bryan Fogel were awarded the WGA’s prize for Best Documentary Screenplay for their film The Dissident<\/strong>, beating out All In: The Fight for Democracy<\/strong>, Herb Alpert Is<\/strong>, Red Penguins<\/strong> and Totally Under Control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The WGAs are often a bellwether for how the corresponding Best original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay could play out at the Academy Awards next month. (The Academy does not have a category for Documentary Screenplay.) Four out of the five nominees in the Best Original Screenplay category were also nominated in the Oscar race. <\/p>\n

Fennell’s win comes against some strong competition against the likes of Aaron Sorkin (The Trial Of The Chicago 7<\/strong>), who was generally seen as a frontrunner. Promising Young Woman<\/strong>, which has a total of fgive nominations including a second one for Fennell as Best Director, is now better positioned going into the homestretch of the Oscar race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
