The Criterion Collection is going high def.<\/p>\n

The specialty home video release label has announced today<\/a> that it will begin releasing new titles in the 4K High Def format. The announcement comes after fans of the label had been speculating for months as to when Criterion was going to start releasing titles in the format.<\/p>\n

The first wave of titles announced for their new 4K UHD initiative are Citizen Kane<\/strong>, The Red Shoes<\/strong>, Mullholland Drive<\/strong>, The Piano<\/strong>, A Hard Day\u2019s Night<\/strong> and Menace II Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to their press release –<\/p>\n

Each title will be available in a 4K UHD+Blu-ray combo pack including a 4K UHD disc of the feature film as well as the film and its special features on Blu-ray. Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Criterion stated that they will have more information available next week as to what special features this initial wave of titles will support.<\/p>\n

The inclusion of Citizen Kane<\/strong> is a pleasant surprise and a nice to Criterion’s hitory. The Orson Welles masterpiece was the very first release from the company in 1984, when it was exclusively releasing films on the now long defunct laserdisc format. However, Criterion never re-released their edition of Citizen Kane<\/strong> when the company shifted focus to DVD and eventually blu-ray disc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
