Dakota Johnson is in talks to play the title character in Sony’s upcoming Madame Webb<\/strong>. The film is part of the studio’s burgeoning cinematic universe of Spider-Man related characters.<\/p>\n

Madame Webb<\/strong> will join a line-up that includes the previously released Venom<\/strong> films, Morbius<\/strong>, which opens on April 1, and the upcoming Kraven The Hunter<\/strong>. There is no word yet as to how these films will all link together, if indeed they will.<\/p>\n

The film, which will set Johnson as the first female lead character in the studio’s Spider-Man related franchise, will be directed by S.J. Clarkson<\/a> with Morbius<\/strong> writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless providing the screenplay<\/a>. The studio had been developing a couple of other female-centric Spidey-spinoff films, though apparently they are not quite as far along the development process as Madame Web appears to be.<\/p>\n

First appearing in 1980 in Amazing Spider-Man<\/em> #210, Madame Web is a psychic who has the ability to foresee the future of spider-themed heroes and villains. Very old and surrounded by a web-like life support machine that helps keep her alive, Madame Web has provided counsel to not only Peter Parker but several others as well. Confined due to her age and paralysis, she often uses these heroes to fulfill missions and errands of her own.<\/p>\n

There is no word as to when the film is slated to start production, but if the studio is looking to slate it on their schedule some time after Kraven The Hunter<\/strong>, then I wouldn’t be surprised if it were front of cameras by the end of the year, pandemic permitting.<\/p>\n
