But few could expect that an Oscar-winning screenwriter would be tapped to write the follow up, and his involvement might bring an acclaimed director back to the <strong>X-Men <\/strong>franchise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100110110714\/http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com:80\/hr\/content_display\/film\/news\/e3i367bfce562b7ee624637405023e9228f\" target=\"_blank\">The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>has announced that Christopher McQuarrie, who won an Academy Award for his work on <strong>The Usual Suspects<\/strong>, will be taking over writing chores on the sequel to this year&#8217;s <strong>X-Men Origins: Wolverine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The sequel is rumored to be an ipso facto adaptation to the character-defining Chris Claremont and Frank Miller <strong>Wolverine <\/strong>comic book miniseries. If that is the case, the story will take place in Japan and deal with Logan&#8217;s run in with\u00a0crime boss\u00a0and his star-crossed romance with the gangster&#8217;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>McQuarrie&#8217;s involvement has caused <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150922184048\/http:\/\/splashpage.mtv.com\/2009\/08\/13\/the-usual-suspects-writer-to-script-wolverine-sequel%E2%80%94could-bryan-singer-be-next\/\" target=\"_blank\">MTV&#8217;s Splash Page<\/a> to theorize that it might also mean director Bryan Singer&#8217;s return to the <strong>X-Men <\/strong>franchise. McQuarrie is a frequent collaborator of\u00a0Singer&#8217;s. In addition to<strong> The Usual Suspects<\/strong>, the screenwriter also worked with the director on<strong> Public Access<\/strong> and<strong> Valkyrie<\/strong>, worked an uncredited contribution on the first <strong>X-Men <\/strong>film, and received an &#8220;special thanks&#8221; on <strong>Apt Pupil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Singer has recently <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150909203200\/http:\/\/splashpage.mtv.com\/2009\/06\/02\/bryan-singer-regrets-leaving-x-men-for-superman\/\" target=\"_blank\">gone on record <\/a>expressing interest in returning to the <strong>X-Men <\/strong>film universe. His involvement in rebooting Warner&#8217;s Superman franchise with <strong>Superman Returns<\/strong> took him out of the running for second <strong>X-Men <\/strong>sequel, <strong>X-Men: The Last Stand<\/strong>, which was directed instead by Brett Ratner.<\/p>\n<p>Singer&#8217;s involvement is only in the wishful thinking stage, but is interesting to contemplate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">In the opinion of many, it would be hard for\u00a0a Wolverine sequel to not get better.
