Sydney Sweeney could be heading to space.<\/p>\n

The Emmy-nominated Euphoria<\/em> actress has been attached to star in the latest attempt to return the comic strip heroine Barbarella to the big screen. Additionally, the actress will receive an executive producer credit. The project is still in early development at Sony and no writer or director has signed on yet.<\/p>\n

This will be the actress’s second project at Sony. She will star alongside Mike Epps and Dakota Johnson in Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent Madame Web<\/strong> which recently wrapped production and is due for an early 2024 release.<\/p>\n

Created by French comic strip artist Jean-Claude Forest, Barbarella is an adventuress, traversing space in the far future and often encountering aliens who seem intent on seducing her.<\/p>\n

Barbarella was first brought to the silver screen in 1968. Directed by Roger Vadim and starring Jane Fonda, the film is considered something of a cult classic today. There have been numerous previous attempts to return the character to film in the 1990s and early aughts. The most notable attempt came in 2007 from writer\/director Robert Rodriguez, who had the project set up at Universal with Rose McGowan set to star, but the studio balked<\/a> after the budget escalated from $60 to $100 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
