Bredan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are getting back into the mummy hunting business.<\/p>\n

The pair who starred in 199’s The Mummy<\/strong> and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns<\/strong>, are reportedly in talks to return to the franchise in a new installment at Universal Studios. This will be the fifth big screen installment of the franchise. Fraser starred in a third Mummy<\/strong> film – 2008’s Tomb Of The Dragon<\/strong> – though Weisz declined to return. A 2002 theatrical spinoff, The Scorpion King<\/strong>, was an early starring role for Dwayne Johnson, and lead to four direct-to-video sequels.<\/p>\n

The film is set to be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known under the collective name of Radio Silence. David Coggeshall, who co-wrote Tomb Of The Dragon<\/strong>, has written the screenplay for this new installment. The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> is saying that this new film will ignore that third film.<\/p>\n

There is no word as to whether any other characters from the franchise, such as John Hannah’s Jonathan Carnahan or Arnold Vosloo’s Imhotep.<\/p>\n

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are a good choice for to revitalize this iteration of Universal’s Mummy<\/strong> franchise. The pair did similar work on the Scream<\/strong> franchise, relaunching that with Scream 5<\/strong> and Scream 6<\/strong> in 2022 and 2023. They have also successfully blended horror and action in 2018’s Ready Or Not<\/strong> and last year’s Abigail<\/strong>. Next April will see the release of the Ready Or Not<\/strong> sequel, Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
