Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another<\/strong> was the big winner at this year’s Academy Awards, taking home six Oscar statuettes including those for Best Picture, Best Director and Adapted Screenplay. Sean Penn also took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film.<\/p>\n

Writer\/director Ryan Coogler’s tale of vampires in the Deep South during the Depression, Sinners<\/strong>, took home four Academy Awards including the one for Best Original Sreenplay. Sinners<\/strong> Director of Photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw is the first woman nominated in the category win in the Cinematography category. She is also the first woman to have shoot a 65mm IMAX feature film.<\/p>\n

Sinners<\/strong> entered into the Academy Award season with a record sixteen nominations, with One Battle After Another<\/strong> in a close second place with thirteen nominations. Going through the awards season, the two films were often neck and neck in terms of honors from the various guilds and critics groups.<\/p>\n

Another history making moment came in the Live Action Short Films category, where two of the nominees – The Singers<\/strong> and Two People Exchanging Saliva<\/strong>. Ties have previously only happened six times in Academy history, the last being in 2012 for Sound Editing (Skyfall<\/strong> and Zero Dark Thirty<\/strong>). This is the second tie in the short film, with Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life<\/strong> and Trevor<\/strong> sharing the award in 1994. Presenter Kumail Nanjiani quipped, “Ironic that the short film category is going to twice as long.”<\/p>\n
