Through its sixty years of taking audiences and fans through the furthest reaches of space, Star Trek<\/strong> has told countless stories. Across thirteen television and streaming series and thirteen feature films, Star Trek has taken its viewers to numerous corners of the galaxy. And that’s not even counting the hundreds of spinoff novels and comic book series that been published across the decades for fans to enjoy.<\/p>\n

But despite this wealth of adventures of the crews of the starship Enterprise that have been told, there are still others that have not. Stories and scripts that were developed for various iterations of the franchise that never got the final go-ahead to be put into production. Some were meant as episodes for the various TV series, some where meant as big screen adventures and some were meant to launch entirely new versions of the franchise. And, as we head towards the franchise’s sixtieth anniversary, we are going to take a look at many of them in this new feature series – Star Trek: The Unseen Voyage.<\/p>\n

So let’s start at the very beginning with the origins of the original Star Trek series.<\/p>\n

The Pitch<\/h2>\n

Although Star Trek<\/em> premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966, series creator first pitched the network on a science-fiction show to the network two-and-a-half years earlier. In a document dated March 11, 1964, Roddenberry outlined a new television series which he described as “Horatio Hornblower in space”, referencing the series of C. S. Forester high adventure novels set during the Napoleonic Wars that could easily be laid into a futuristic, science-fiction milieu.<\/p>\n

The series would chart the adventures of Captain Robert April and the crew of the SS Yorktown<\/em>, including his executive officer known only as Number One, ship’s navigator Jose Ortegas, ship’s doctor Phillip Boyce, the Captain’s Yeoman and the ship’s First Lieutenant, the alien Mr. Spock, described as “probably half-Martian” with “a slightly reddish complexion and semi-pointed ears.” Their mission would be to explore the galaxy and “patrol the ninth Quadrant, beginning with Alpha Centuri and extending to the outer Pinial Galaxy limit.”<\/p>\n

Needless to say, while the initial pitch does contain some of the framework that would become Star Trek<\/em> as we know it, there are a number of details that had yet to be worked out or would change as the Roddenberry developed the series and concepts further before getting the greenlight to produce a pilot episode. The Yorktown became the Enterprise<\/em>, Robert April underwent a name change to Christopher Pike and Spock’s complexion changed from red to green as did his planet of origin from Mars to Vulcanis. (It would be shortened down to just “Vulcan” by the time the show would premier in 1966.) The characters of ship’s doctor Dr. Philip Boyce, and executive officer Number One also carried over to the first Star Trek<\/em> pilot, “The Cage.”<\/p>\n

The remaining bridge crew characters would get renamed, but it wouldn’t be the last that the franchise would see of some of these names. The character of Robert April, now canonically the first captain of the Enterprise and a commodore, would show up first in the final Star Trek: The Animated Series<\/em> episode, “The Counter-Clock Incident” before making the jump to live action almost fifty years later in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/em>. Strange New Worlds<\/em> would also get its own navigator by the name of Ortegas, although in this case it is Erica Ortegas as played by Melissa Navia. (The Strange New Worlds<\/em>‘ production team has stated that this was a deliberate callback.)<\/p>\n

The Loglines<\/h2>\n

\"Gene<\/a>Part of Roddenberry’s pitch included a number of potential stories this proposed series could tell, standard practice for a writer\/producer trying to sell a television show concept to a network. Often times these become springboards for actual episodes, sometimes not. Interestingly, in the nineteen story ideas that Roddenberry outlined in this first series treatment, only five of them would become actual produced episodes, whereas individual ideas from some of the other premises would show up here and there throughout the show’s first season.<\/p>\n

The Produced Stories<\/h2>\n

The very first log line in the pitch, “The Next Cage” imagines Captain April “caged and on exhibition like an animal, then offered a mate.” This would eventually be chosen by Roddenberry as the basis for the first Star Trek pilot, “The Cage.” Roddenberry would refine the idea in his screenplay, and although NBC would reject this first pilot, once the series was commissioned, Roddenberry used it as the basis of the two-part episode “The Menagerie.”<\/p>\n

The logline titled “The Day Charlie Became God” posits a story about an “accidental occurrence of infinite power to do all things, in the hands of a very finite man.” This was the synopsis chosen by Roddenberry’s assistant a thetime, Dorthy “D. C.” Fontana to develop into a full script. The result, initially titled “Charlie’s Law,” became “Charlie X” by the time it aired as the show’s second episode. Interestingly, this is basically the same basic plot of Star Trek<\/em>‘s second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” though that was developed independently by screenwriter Samuel A. Peeples. (Reportedly, Roddenberry also did extensive rewrites on the script.)<\/p>\n

“President Capone” sees Roddenberry introducing his “parallel worlds” idea for the first time by positing a “parallel world, Chicago ten years after Al Capone won and imposed gangland statutes upon the nation.” The end result was the classic episode “A Piece Of The Action,” which interestingly ejects out the “Parallel Worlds” idea in exchange for a previously visiting starship contaminating the planet’s culture leading to a gangster-centric society.<\/p>\n

“The Women” outline takes a “page from the ‘Old West'” with a tale of women being transported to “a far-off colony,” with the objective of finding husbands. While based in the history of Old West Mail Order Brides – see also Seven Brides For Seven Brothers<\/strong> – the logline not-so-progressively suggests there will be “hank-panky aboard” the Yorktown<\/em>. The idea will eventually get refined down to the first season episode “Mudd’s Women.”<\/p>\n

The last logline that would eventually become a classic Star Trek<\/em> story, though it’s title and plot would actually become two different episodes. “The Man Trap” envisions members of the crew traveling “from one point on a planet to another,” for unknown reasons. While this world at first appears fairly benign and Earth-like, the group soon begins to see strange apparitions that Roddenberry describes as “wish-fulfillment traps… Whatever a man wants most will appear before him, i.e., water, food, a female, a long-dead parent, gold, or even a to power.” As these apparitions grow more subtle, they threaten to set the Yorktown<\/em> grew against each other. While the title is familiar to Star Trek fans, there is no Salt Vampire in the description here. The core idea in this logline would actually be used for a different classic Trek episode, the first season episode “Shore Leave.” In it, the Enterprise<\/em> crew discovers an uninhabited, Earth-like planet that seemingly grants individual’s wishes. The main difference here, is that “Shore Leave” is played very light-hearted with no real danger for Captain Kirk and company, while the pitch here is definitely more hard-edged examination of the idea with real stakes and consequences.<\/p>\n

The Unproduced Stories<\/h2>\n

To Skin A Tyrannosaurus<\/h3>\n

The proposed plotline for this – “A modern man [is] reduced to a sling and a club in a world 1,000,000 B.C.” – is frankly the barest sketch of an idea. Will this episode make a statement about how man has barely progressed from his prehistoric instincts despite the trappings of civilization? A tale of survival? A time travel story?\u00a0 Something else? Despite its lack of specificity, it does seem to offer some visual excitement that could catch the attention of a network executive.<\/p>\n

The Coming<\/h3>\n

The crew of the Yorktown<\/em> encounter an alien civilization “but something disturbingly familiar about the quiet dignity of one who is being condemned to crucifixion.” Needless to say, the logline is not very subtle about its Christ allegory. It is interesting in that this is at least an attempt to engage with the topic of religion, something the series would studiously avoid. (The final story beat of the episode “Bread And Circuses” not withstanding.) Centering a whole episode in this way might have given the network pause, though, perhaps thinking that the core idea would be seen as blasphemous to some audiences. Roddenberry would return time and again to the idea of his characters meeting God or a reasonable facsimile.<\/p>\n

The Perfect World<\/h3>\n

Captain April and crew come across a planet populated by a “a civilization approximating earth circa 1964,” just with “seeming perfect order, no crime, no social problems, no hunger or disease.” But they soon discover that the world is not so much like 1964 than it is 1984<\/em>, the George Orwell novel that is. As the crew begins to investigate, Captain April is arrested and “subjected to incredible police barbarism.”<\/p>\n

The story outlined here is perhaps the pitch document’s most outright statement that Star Trek<\/em> will be using science-fiction allegory as a way to comment on then-current social issues. “The Perfect World” looks to possibly explore the idea that Ben Franklin put forth when he stated, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”<\/p>\n

This story proposal also leans very heavily on Roddenberry’s “Parallel Worlds” concept that he refers to numerous times in the pitch document. Basically, “Parallel Worlds” refers to the idea that on many of the worlds the crew of the Yorktown<\/em> will journey to, its people, culture and history will have developed in ways very similar to Earth. This would allow the show to use existing costume and sets instead of necessarily having to design and create entire new alien environments and accoutrements for each new planet visited. Roddenberry doesn’t credit the idea to any scientific futurist or a science-fiction writer, so it may very well have been just a conceit he came up with as a way to allay network executives’ fears about the show’s budget. (The second season episode “Bread And Circuses” will invoke it as “Hodgson’s Law of Planetary Development” to handwave away it’s quasi-Roman Empire-in-the- 20th-century setting.)<\/p>\n

The “parallel worlds” idea will appear quite often as we look at the proposed storylines from this document, but it will be toned down somewhat in execution by the time the series starts shooting. Still, there will be a number of episodes in Star Trek<\/em>‘s three-season run where the Enterprise crew will find themselves somehow tripping over Earth’s history out in the stars. But the reasons behind a majority of such encounters will be explained away in a various number of ways that don’t rely on Roddenberry’s frankly implausible “Parallel Worlds” idea.<\/p>\n

Mr. Socrates<\/h3>\n

The crew of the Yorktown<\/em> discover a planet that has been in telepathic contact with Earth for centuries and has use that connection to make replicas of “the most unusual intellects produced in mankind’s history. One a single street one might meet such people as Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Florence Nightingale, Genghis Khan, Thomas Jefferson, Carry Nation and Adolf Hitler.” At first this all seems very unusual, but it “suddenly becomes a very real and very deadly game as they begin to realize this is a form of ‘Roman Colosseum,’ [and] that the participants are all “Gladiators.”<\/p>\n

This certainly sounds like a weird hodgepodge of two conflicting ideas and raises the question – If the inhabitants of this planet are recreating “the most unusual intellects in human history,” why would they then subject them to forced gladiatorial combat? Sure someone like Genghis Khan would probably make for a good gladiator, but I don’t think that someone like Florence Nightingale or American temperance advocate Carry Nation would provide similar results.<\/p>\n

That aside, the pitch does stretch the idea of “Parallel Worlds” in an unexpected direction, even in the face of its absolute lack of logic. The outline gives no reason as to why this civilization would go to all the trouble of creating doppelgangers of Earth’s intellectuals only to force them to physically fight each other for their amusement. There just doesn’t seem to be any kind of way to make this idea work, which is probably why it never progressed any further.<\/p>\n

The Stranger<\/h3>\n

While in transit between two inhabited worlds, the Yorktown<\/em> is slowly taken over by a disembodied intelligence looking to take over the minds of the crew and attack the civilization on the planet they are journeying towards. Describing the story as more of a “horror tale,” Roddenberry’s intent here was to “examine the subtleness of this attack on intelligence, reaching a point where mutual suspicion is endangering the entire ship.”<\/p>\n

The Enterprise<\/em> would also encounter a discorporeal intelligence during the second season episode “A Wolf In The Fold.” However in that episode, written by Psycho<\/em> author Robert Bloch, the intelligence has been around for centuries, feeding on people’s fears and taking control of people to commit murder to generate that fear. It is even revealed that it was behind the Jack the Ripper murders in the Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1888.<\/p>\n

Camelot Revisited<\/h3>\n

In this proposed episode, the crew of the Yorktown<\/em> would visit a planet that is “thoroughly modern in many respects but retains the knighthood, armor and other trappings similar to our middle ages.” The crew soon find themselves interacting with the inhabitants to “the point where they too are engaged in lance and sword play to preserve their own skins.”<\/p>\n

Roddenberry notes in the pitch that the episode would have “a touch” of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court<\/em>, and it certainly sounds like it again aims to capitalize on his “Parallel Worlds” idea. However, there doesn’t seem to be much more to it than a “What is going on here?” setup and the Yorktown<\/em> crew trying to extricate themselves from the series of misunderstandings that they get themselves into. It sounds much more like a string of incidences rather than actual plot.<\/p>\n

100 A.B.\/ A Century After the Bomb<\/h3>\n

One of the shortest and most vague of the proposed story outlines, this episode would “examine what might be our own world a few decades after an atomic holocaust.” Nothing more is fleshed out here. But just the idea that the show might want to examine the aftermath of a nuclear exchange is understandable, as Roddenberry was writing this document barely seventeen months after the world found itself on the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In the right hands, it quite possibly could have been developed into a hard-hitting episode. That is, if the network would have let them go forward with what could be considered a controversial topic in the first place.<\/p>\n

Kentucky, Kentucky<\/h3>\n

The Yorktown<\/em> is assigned to check in on a colony that was established fifty years previously. Arriving, they discover that the original human settlement had been attacked by native “viking-like savages,” and the colonists now scattered and living in frontier-style log forts. Captain April will try to rally and “lead the colonists in defense.”<\/p>\n

Another “Parallel Worlds” story idea that might sound good initially on paper, but seems like it could be costly in terms of outdoor location shooting and the need for a standing frontier fort outdoor set. (Star Trek<\/em>‘s production company Desilu Studios had a western town standing sets on their backlot in Culver City, but not a frontier fort. They would have had to rent that outdoor set location from another studio, such as Warner Brothers.)<\/p>\n

Reason\/ Reason II<\/h3>\n

This is a rather unique entry in Roddenberry’s potential plotlines, a possible two-part story where either episode could function on its own. In the first half, the crew of the Yorktown<\/em> come across a planet where the native intelligent life had apparently died out, leaving a society of robots continuing on. April and crew begin to study this strange new world, infiltrating this robot society until they are discovered. In the second part, the story would center on “the struggle of the last human survivors, aided by our Cruiser’s reconnaissance party, outmatched and relatively defenseless as they attempt to reseize possession of their planet.”<\/p>\n

Out of all the proposed stories in the pitch, this is one of the few that feels most like what some of the best original series Star Trek<\/em> episodes have to offer. It has the potential to ask interesting questions about the human condition and whether artificial life is truly sentient and deserving of its own right to exist while still delivering some action and adventure amidst its philosophizing. And the two-part structure fully allows the show to examine both sides of the question. Some of the nascent ideas suggested here concerning artificial life can be seen as ultimately informing storylines for the character of Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>.<\/p>\n
