Next month will see the DVD release of the 1968 Vincent Price classic Witchfinder General (originally released in the United States as The Conqueror Worm) and fans of the film will have much more on the disc than the usual paltry extras MGM provides for its “Midnight Movies” line of cult film releases, thanks to the folks over at CinemaRetro magazine.
It turns out that following the magazine’s extensive coverage of the film – including an interview with producer Philip Waddilove – in their fifth issue, Waddilove suggested that the magazine forward a couple copies of the issue to the Fox/MGM home video division along with a request that the company think about making the release a special edition. Fast forward to the presen, with the DVD coming to stores sporting such features as a commentary track with Waddilove and co-star Ian Ogilvy and a featurette on the film.
Witchfinder General is just one of many Vincent Price DVDs hitting the shelves on September 11. There’s also two Price sets being released by MGM- The Fly Collection (featuring The Fly (1958), The Return Of The Fly (1959) and The Curse Of The Fly (1965)) and MGM Scream Legends Collection: Vincent Price (featuring Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972), Madhouse (1974), Tales Of Terror (1962), Theater Of Blood (1973), Twice Told Tales (1963), Witchfinder General and a bonus disc).
Congrats to publishers Lee Pfeifer and Dave Worrall, who also wrote the magazine’s coverage of the film, for getting Fox/MGM to step up to the plate and give this film’s DVD release the attention it deserves!
