SDCC 2008: Day 1 Round Up- TRON 2, WATCHMEN, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL, More

It used to be that Thursday was considered “Preview Day” at the San Diego Comic Con, but the last few years have seen it transform into a full fledged day of programming as the con has continued to grow, pushing its preview day to Wednesday. If the con continues to grow, how soon will it be until it runs an entire week? Might sometime in the future will people (and by people we mean those condescending folks over at Entertainment Weekly) stop referring to the San Diego Comics Con as the Geek Prom and start referring to it as the Geek Ramadan?

Anyway, there was lots of good film related news coming out of yesterday’s events and we’ll point you in the direction of the best coverage for each breaking story.

Tron 2– Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day went to Disney, who, at the end of their panel promoting their upcoming Race To Witch Mountain, they screened a three minute promo for a sequel to their 198- cult hit Tron. Aint ItCool has a good breakdown of the footage as well as a little bit more background information on the project, courtesy of a source within Disney. Surprisingly, this footage hasn’t turned up online yet in either official or less-than-official venues.

Watchmen– Our own Bill Gatevackes is on the scene in San Diego and managed to send back these pictures of the actual size Owlman’s airship prop from the upcoming film.

Punisher: War Zone– Lionsgate is taking a second try at launching a Punisher franchise after their first attempt bombed back in 200-. IGN is hosting the new trailer that debuted yesterday, but have been nice enough to allow it to be embedded elsewhere, so here it is. It does contain some graphic violence, so you’ll have to pinky swear that you are old enough to watch such things.

The Day The Earth Stood Still– Twentieth Century Fox had stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connolley on hand to try and convince the crowd that remaking a classic film is a good thing. IGN cornered them for a quick interview.

Red Sonja– We showed you the teaser poster for Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming swords-and-chainmail bikinis epic Red Sonja, but Cinematical has a good rundown of Rodriguez and star Rose McGowan’s appearance.

Rocknrolla– Director Guy Ritchie was on hand with stars Gerard Butler and Jeremy Piven to debut a new trailer for the film and crack wise. SlashFilm‘s got their wise cracks and the new trailer is embedded below.
