Has Robert Rodriguez cast actress and perpetual tabloid fodder Lindsay Lohan in his new film Machete? It certainly looks like it according to Lohan’s Twitter account.
Late this past Friday, Lohan twittered, “something was made official today!!!!!!!!!” and then followed it up a few minutes later by tweeting a link to the IMDB‘s Machete page. Seems pretty conclusive, doesn’t it?
Machete started life as a faux-trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse mashup, though Rodriguez was very quick to announce that he wanted to make a full length version of the story of a former Mexican Federale-turned-day laborer (Danny Trejo) who becomes entangled in a plot to assassinate a Senator. You can check out the Grindhouse trailer below, but be warned, it is extremely NSFW. (Unless you work in a strip club.)
Have Rodriguez and Machete co-director Ethan Maniquis cast Lohan for her acting abilities (Go back and look at Mean Girls and A Prairie Home Companion before her life became a tabloid circus. She’s pretty good.) or are they looking to play off the tradition of a starlet in a career decline taking a job in an exploitation flick? Either way, it is an interesting choice and perhaps Lohan can use the role as a way to launch a come back.
