Bubba Smith, 66

Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith, the professional football player-turned-actor, was found dead in his Bladwin Hills home in Los Angeles. He was 66.

After a football career that saw him earn a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame and nine season in the NFL, Smith turned to acting. After several television appearances, Smith landed the role of Moses Hightower in the 1984 comedy Police Academy. A florist who wants a career in law enforcement, Hightower was soft spoken but possessed great strength. He continued to play the character through all six of the franchise’s installments.

Smith also co-starred in the short-lived television series Blue Thunder. He also appeared in a handful of small, indie films.
