Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman and first published in 1985, the Garbage Pail Kids were a trading card series that parodied the craze for the ultra-cute Cabbage Patch Dolls. Eisner bought the trading card company two years ago.
Shorts director PES, giving McG a run for his money in the silly one-name name category, has been hired to helm the project and he has been already at work with Michael Vukadinovich in developing the film’s story. Vukadinovich is the author of the 2011 Black List script The Three Misfortunes Of Geppetto, which Twentieth Century Fox recently purchased. PES’s short films Fresh Guacamole, Roof Sex and Western Spaghetti have all gone viral
The Garbage Pail Kids hit the big screen once before in a truly awful film in 1987 which starred Anthony Newley, shortly before he died. Normally I would suggest that just because one bad film was made from a concept doesn’t mean that a god film couldn’t also be made from the same concept. But the `87 Garbage Pail Kids movie was so egregiously bad that I am not holding out much hope.
Below are a couple of PES’s short films as well as a memorable ad he created for Coinstar, followed by the trailer for the original Garbage Pail Kids film.
