In a press release sent out today Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League has announced that the chain will be taking over the Upper West Side movie house the Metro Theater at 2626 Broadway.
From the press release-
“My often-stated top priority for the Alamo Drafthouse has been to open a venue in New York,” said Alamo founder and CEO Tim League. “When we discovered the availability of the historic Metro theater, we immediately knew we had found the perfect location for our new Manhattan home.”
The venue will feature five screens of new releases, repertory programming and the Alamo’s unique signature programming. Like all Alamo Drafthouse theaters, the Alamo Drafthouse at the Metro will provide food and drink service to your seat and will uphold its famously strict no-talking policy. The new theater is currently scheduled to open in 2013.

It has been hard to read about film online for the last decade and a half or so without seeing stories of all the amazing programs and events that the original Alamo Drafthouse have presented. As the company has slowly started to expand across the country, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the announcement that they would be opening up a New York City theater at some point. Now to start saving some extra cash for all those trips into the City I foresee in my future…
