The Kickstarter campaign for a Veronica Mars feature film wrapped up this weekend with an impressive $5.7 million in pledges, nearly three times its initial goal. With a total of 91,585 backers, the campaign also set new records for the crowdfunding website.
If all continues as planned, shooting on the film should commence this summer for a release in early 2014. After series star Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring has been the first of the television series cast announced as returning for the film.
The reverberations of this will continue to emmenate for a while. We know that many filmmakers have been considering going the Kickstarter route in the wake of the Veronica Mars campaign hitting their initial $2 million goal within its first 11 hours. But crowdsourcing is not necessarily the solution for every project. Director Alex Cox has a Kickstarter campaign going for his long-planned adaptation of the satirical science-fiction novel Bill, The Galactic Hero, but with just six days to go he is still short of achieving his far more modest $100,000 goal.
