When FilmBuffOnline head honcho Rich Drees wrote about a musical based on the film Heathers way back in 2009, I really didn’t believe it would see the light of day, let alone be opening Off-Broadway. It seems I was wrong.
Heathers is returning to New York City in March for a limited run at New World Stages. A concert presentation of the musical was present at renowned NYC music venue Joe’s Pub back in 2010. It is currently coming off a developmental run at Hudson Backstage Theater in Los Angeles.
The music for the show is done by Tony-nominee Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde: The Musical) with a script and lyrics by Kevin Murphy (Emmy-winner for the 2005 Showtime musical adaptation Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical) and is directed by Andy Fickman (The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain). Cast has yet to be announced.
Performances will begin on March 17, 2014 and run until September 7, 2014. The show’s website can be accessed by clicking here, and tickets for the first two weeks of performances can be purchased here.
A note for non-Broadway literate: You might hear “Off-Broadway” and think of shows done in church basements with actors sharing the venue with bingo paraphernalia. That’s more Off-Off-Broadway. New World Stages is a newer theater (lest than ten years old) that specializes in debuting plays and musicals that eventually go on to Broadway (Rock of Ages), come from Broadway (Million Dollar Quartet, The 39 Steps, Peter and the Starcatcher, Avenue Q), or are a little too weird for Broadway but yet have mass appeal (Evil Dead: The Musical, The Toxic Avenger, Altar Boyz).
