This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first time that the starship Enterprise warped across television screens and this new trailer for the latest franchise continuation, Star Trek Beyond, marks the first time that we’ve seen this movie show that it may honor some of the ideas that creator Gene Roddenberry imbued in the originals Star Trek series. The trailer opens with Kirk (Chris Pine) questioning his reasons for joining Starfleet and his friend and confidant Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) suggesting that Kirk is in need of some self-reflection. The trailer then, as if it wants us to know that the film is definitely not a 23rd century resetting of My Dinner With Andre or some such film, the trailer transitions into a melange of action sequences, fights and explosions. This is a summer blockbuster after all. Will the film achieve a good mix of interesting characterization in with all the outer space strum und drang? We’ll find out on July 22 when Star Trek Beyond blasts into theaters.
