I have to admit that I am approaching Blade Runner 2049 with a bit of trepidation. Sequels that come long after the release of their progenitor film do not have a strong track record. And given Blade Runner‘s status as a certified classic, it feels reasonable to wonder of the film’s particular brand of lightening can be captured in a bottle twice. But as bits of Blade Runner 2049 are being revealed, as in this new trailer, gives me some encouragement that it can stand on its own. Visually the aesthetic closely follows as the original, as does Jared Leto’s character’s comments about Replicants being essentially slave labor.
Here’s the studio’s official synopsis –
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
Blade Runner 20149 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto and hits theaters on October 6.
