Pierce Brosnan will be squaring off against Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming superhero film Black Adam. Brosnan has signed onto the film to play the mystical superhero Doctor Fate opposite Johnson’s superpowered anti-hero, the titular Black Adam.
Brosnan’s casting rounds out the roster of actors who will be portraying the Justice Society superhero team in the movie. The other actors on the super team’s lineup include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
Doctor Fate, aka Kent Nelson, is the possessor of the Helmet of Fate, a mystical artifact that grants its wearer control over powerful magic. It was empowered by the Lord of Order Nabu, one of a group of supernatural beings who oversee the balance of order and chaos in the universe. Nelson has been just one of many people who have worn the Helmet over the years.
With the inclusion of Doctor Fate, it is looking as if Black Adam is stepping up its exploration of the magical and mystical side of the DC Comics Universe that started first with Wonder Woman and continued into Shazam. This makes sense as the character of Black Adam ties into the magical lore of Shazam, it was obvious that this movie was going to at least touch upon it. But since Doctor Fate is not connected to the Shazam/Black Adam lore, his inclusion here is opening up a whole new sector of that world to potentially explore.
After years worth of delays while the film slowly worked its way through development, Black Adam finally gets in front of cameras next month for a 2023 release.
