Dave Filoni has been named Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm.

According to Vanity Fair, who broke the news, Filoni will be involved in the early development of future Star Wars film and television projects, working alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and head of development Carrie Beck.

While Filoni has been a major creative force in the Star Wars universe for the last two decades, the new position will see him offering input on future projects as they enter the development process. “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways,” he explained to Vanity Fair. “In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”

Filoni first came to Lucasfilm to help develop and direct the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series which debuted in 2008. He additionally oversaw the Clone Wars follow ups Rebels and Resistance before moving onto live action with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, The Book Of Boba Fett and most recently Ahsoka.

In his early days at Lucasfilm on The Clone Wars, Filoni often worked in tandem with Star Wars creator George Lucas developing much of the lore and backstory featured in the series. As such, Filoni is thought by many fans to have the second best understanding of the franchise right after Lucas himself.

While Lucasfilm has been having success in rolling out their various Disney+ series, they have stumbled in getting a new feature film out to theaters.
