Blumhouse is getting ready to tell us that something is killing the children.

The genre production house has secured the rights to the popular horror comic Something Is Killing The Children from publisher Boom! Studios.

The series, created by writer James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, tells the story Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter for a secret society whose mission is to protect the world from murderous monsters that only children can see. But the society for which Erica works for doesn’t always seem to be on the die of the angels.

The acquisition comes as the conclusion of a bidding war for the title which saw Netflix and Lionsgate making offers. This wasn’t Netflix’s first dalliance with Something Is Killing The Children. The streamer originally picked up the television rights to the series in 2023 and had the likes of Mike Flanagan and the duo of Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese work on developing it before they let their option lapse at the end of 2024.

Blumhouse is looking to capitalize on both the film and television rights to the property and will be developing a live-action big screen adaptation as well as an animated version for TV. No creative team has been announced for either version yet.

Something Is Killing The Children was launched in September 2019, and was an immediate hit. Its first issue sold over 175,000 copies across a number of printings. A spinoff series, House Of Slaughter, is also a top seller for Boom. The main title is considered to be the most popular horror comic since The Walking Dead. An inter-company crossover with DC Comics which will involve their Swamp Thing character and titled Swamp Thing Is Killing The Children was announced last week at New York Comic Con set to be published next year.
