Marvel giveth and Marvel taketh away.
Marvel Studios and Disney+ have opted to end their streaming series Daredevil: Born Again after its third season is released early next year.
The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Marvel has passed on renewing the contract of series showrunner Dario Scardapane, effectively bring the series to a close. The show’s upcoming third season has already been shot and is reportedly deep in post-production. It remains unclear as to who will supervise the final steps to make the show ready to stream.
Marvel and Disney+ have been pulling back on the number of streaming series that they have been producing. This past July, the studio reversed the renewal it gave to the its fledgling series Wonder Man. It was a move that surprised many as the show had been the streamer’s biggest Marvel hit in thee past several years.
That’s not to say that Disney+ is totally abandoning Marvel-produced material for their streaming service. Later this fall will see the debut of VisionQuest, the final installment of a trilogy of one-season series that began with WandaVision and continued through to Agatha All Along. The Hollywood Reporter has stated that there are currently three to five potential new Disney+ series in development, with Disney having given the go ahead to a project named ZODIAC. There is no word as to which specific Marvel Comics characters will feature in the show or what creatives have been attached.
Daredevil: Born Again was a followup series to the Netflix series Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018 as part of a deal which saw a number of Marvel’s more street-level characters across several series. Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdoch as the titular hero, a blind lawyer who has a super-heightened sense that allow him to fight crime in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Also returning is Vincent D’Onofrio as crime lord-now-recently-elected-mayor Wilson Fisk and Deborah Ann Woll as Matt’s law firm partner Karen Page. In this year’s second season, Krysten Ritter reprised her role of PI Jessica Jones from her own eponymous Netflix series. Several of the other heroes from the Netflix Marvel shows are expected to return in the upcoming third season.
