It has been years since we’ve had a movie based on Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling classic The Three Musketeers. It has been even more years since we’ve had a really good version of the story. (Though admitedly, Tim Curry’s performance as Cardinal Richelieu in the 1993 version is fun to watch.)

The producers of the recent Sylvester Stallone franchise revival Rambo, are looking to make the film an origin story, showing how Athos, Porthos and Aramis first became friends and commrades in service to the French royalty.

That’s not a bad idea, and one I can’t recall really being touched on before. There have been many films that looked at the trio in their declining years, but nothing looking at the other end of their lives. Even 1952’s At Sword’s Point, featured the Musketeers sons, and one daughter fiestily played by Maureen O’Hara, picking up their fathers’ mantel.

No writers have been hired yet. Millennium is also developing features based on Conan, Red Sonja, Hercules and Buck Rogers.
