Superheroes Dominate Films On Visual Effects Shortlist

For better (The Dark Knight) and worse (The Spirit), 2008 has been a pretty newsworthy year for comic book adaptations at the box office. That trend continues as three of the seven films on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Academy Award are comic book films.

Batman, Iron Man and Hellboy are facing off against each other as well as Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt, Brendon Frasier and some rampaging mummies for a chance at Oscar gold. The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Hellboy 2 join Australia, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Journey To The Center Of The Earth and The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor as potential final nominees for the Academy Award. (Australia and The Mummy? Really?)

Of the seven films, only three will make it into nomination for voting. The nominations will be announced on January 22.
