Well, here’s a bit of unexpected casting. Warner Brothers has just announced that Diane Lane will be playing Superman’s adoptive mother Martha “Ma” Kent in director Zack Snyder’s upcoming refurbishment of their Superman comic book film franchise.
In a press release, Snyder stated –
This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.
I have to admit here, that Lane was not one of the actresses I foresaw as a possible candidate for the role. Ma and Pa Kent were always shown as an older couple whose inability to have children of their own helped fuel their decision to keep the baby Kal-El after they find him in one of their farm’s fields. At age 46, she strikes me as being too young for the role, unless Snyder is planning on shooting some of his film set during Clark Kent’s youth and then use make up to age the actress for current-day set scenes.
