In the wake of his film Chronicle becoming the first sleeper hit of the year, director Josh Trank has found himself courted for two comic book films – Twentieth Century Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot and Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff Venom. But it looks like the comic book film he has decided to take is neither one of those two and instead will be tackling the lesser known comic The Red Star.
Deadline is reporting the news and synopsizes the book as such –
The Soviet-themed sci-fi fantasy comic book series was picked up by Warner Bros after Universal let it go. Created by Christian Gossett, the comic is set in an alternate USSR where futuristic technology co-mingles with magical elements. The protagonist is a Red Fleet soldier who goes up against an ex-leader who rules with an iron fist.
Sounds pretty intriguing, though I’m not sure how ruling an ex-leader can still do, iron fist or not.
The project already has screenwriter Jason Rothenberg signed on to script. He previously has written Warner Brothers’ new Twilight Zone film that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is set to direct.
