Director Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fantasy The Shape Of Waters lead the pack of nominees for the 2018 Academy Awards, netting nods in 13 categories including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.
In addition to nominations in virtually every technical category – including Production Design, Costumes, Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing – The Shape Of Water also got nods in three of the four acting categories for stars Sally Hawkins (Best Actress), Olivia Spencer (Best Supporting Actress) and Richard Spencer (Best Supporting Actor).
Christoper Nolan’s Dunkirk, which retold the British army’s strategic retreat from France during the early part of World War Two earned eight nominations including Best Picture, Director (Nolan’s first nomination) and Original Screenplay. Darkest Hour, which is also set against the backdrop of the early days of World War Two but focusing on British Prime Minister Winston Churchill received six nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for star Gary Oldman.
The Frances McDormand-starring Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received a total of seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (McDormand) and two nominations in Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell). Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread earned six nominations including a Best Actor nomination for Daniel Day Lewis, who has stated that this would be his last role as he is retiring from acting.
Rounding out the Best Director category is Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) and Jordan Peele (Get Out) who both are first-time nominees for their solo feature directing debuts. Both films were also nominated in the Best Picture category.
Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever nominated in the Best Cinematography category for her work on Mudbound, one of four nominations that the film received.
The Academy Awards will be announced on March 4.
