Hulu has driven a stake through the heart of Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot being developed at the streamer is not going forward to a full series, after it had already ordered and produced a pilot episode.
Original series star Sarah Michelle Geller broke the news in a post on her Instagram account.

This Buffy series was announced in early 2025 as a sequel to the original TV series which ran for seven seasons starting in 1997. Geller would be returning in her role as the Chosen One, woman picked to combat vampires and other supernatural baddies. This time around, she would be training a new generation of vampire slayers. Chloe Zhao was brought in to direct the pilot episode commissioned by Hulu, with a script by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. No other cast members from the original series were announced as returning.
This attempt at rebooting the franchise is just one in a series of tries since the original series wrapped its seven year run in 2003. A film reboot was in development at studio 20th Century Fox in 2009, while a TV reboot was reportedly in development with former Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer/producer Monica Owusu-Breen.
It is unknown if Hulu will still release the pilot film as a one-off special.
