Harvey Weinstein Wants SCREAM 5 To Finish Off The Series

Ghostface

It’s been about three years since Scream 4 came out and did reasonably well enough at the box office to suggest a fifth installment would be forthcoming. But since then, there hasn’t been much news on whether or not that sequel would happen. If anything, franchise creator Wes Craven and star Neve Campbell have seemed reluctant to return to the town of Woodsboro for yet another confrontation with the killer Ghostface.

But while it seems that there is not much movement on that fifth film becoming a reality, producer Harvey Weinstein is hoping that it will happen, if only to close out the series. Note, there will be some spoilers ahead for those who haven’t gotten around to see Scream 4 yet.

Speaking at the Zurich International Film Festival, Weinstein stated that he has been asking his brother Bob, who heads up The Weinstein Company’s genre division, Dimension Films, to make a fifth film, if only so they can bring the franchise to a fitting conclusion.

Everyone lived in Scream 4. I’m begging him to do the movie and just end it. We’ve milked that cow.

While it is true that I find fault with some of Weinstein’s decisions in the past, i.e., his constant mismanagement of the Asian films he compulsively buys up the rights to, I have to agree with him here. Scream 4 was initially planned to be the first of a new trilogy of Scream films, but I thought it fumbled its chance to be that right at the ending when it allowed certain characters to live. The film had a string ending, but ruined it by going on for another ten minutes or so for the coda at the hospital. It is perhaps for the best to but a final bow on the franchise.

In the meantime, MTV is developing a television series based on the Scream franchise, but with the reports starting to circulate that it show will feature actual supernatural elements, I’m thinking that it will ultimately bare as much resemblance to the films as the old Friday The 13th TV series did to its progenitor film franchise.
