Meryl Streep is floating out of the sky with an umbrella and into Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns.
The actress has been cast in the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy, in the studio’s sequel to the 1964 classic musical based on P.L. Travers’s series of children’s books.
Directed by Rob Marshall, Mary Poppins Returns sees Emily Blunt stepping into the shoes of the eponymous caretaker made famous by Julie Andrews. Marshall, Blunt and Streep previously collaborated on the musical Into The Woods.
According to Variety –
[T]he story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
