New Releases only number one this week: The real world horror of Winchester.
1. Winchester (Lionsgate, 2,480 Theaters, 99 Minutes, Rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, drug content, some sexual material and thematic elements, Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer at press time: 13% Fresh [23 Reviews]): There is a real Winchester house. It’s in San Jose and it was built by the family that manufactured the Winchester repeating rifle. It’s a patchwork structure with unfinished rooms, crooked hallways and the number 13 prevalent through out. It really was constantly being remodel by Sarah Winchester for the purpose of keep all the ghost killed by her husbands rifles at bay.
Whether or not the ghosts actually existed, or threw people into bookshelves and made paintings bleed, is a question that resides in the realm of urban legend.
What is really scary, however, is that Tomatometer score. Even an Oscar-winner and a fascinating true-life ghost story can’t make a good movie? Frightening.
Next week, we fly to Wakanda and have a couple other sacrificial lambs to talk about.
