Production Company Nu Image/Millennium Films have attached a new writer to their in development Red Sonja film, which is perhaps not as big a news item as the fact that Nu Image/Millennium Films still have their Red Sonja film in development.
Screenwriter Christopher Cosmos, a former VP at production company Benderspink, has been tapped for the gig. Although he has sold a number of spec scripts since leaving his executive job, none have gone into production yet.
The character was originally conceived by Conan the Barbarian pulp writer Robert E. Howard, but really owes her popularity to Conan comic book writer Roy Thomas, who developed the character first in the pages of the 1970s Conan comic and then in her own book. She was previously brought to the big screen in 1985 with Brigitte Nielson in the title role. It did not fare well at the box office nor with critics.
Writer/director Robert Rodriguez famously was developing a Red Sonja project for his then-girlfriend, actress Rose McGowan. Writer/director Doug Aarniokoski also took a stab at the property but yielded no results.
