
Diane Keaton, the celebrated actress with iconic roles in just about every decade, has passed away, People magazine reports. She was 79.
Keaton made her acting debut on the Broadway stage in 1968 in the musical, Hair. She soon caught the attention of Hollywood and made her film debut in 1970’s Lovers and Other Strangers. But her breakthrough role was as Kay Corleone, Michael Corleone’s long-suffering wife in The Godfather.

Woody Allen referred to her as his muse during the early part of his film career. Her partnership with All began on the the Broadway stage, in her Tony-nominated role in Play It Again, Sam, which was written for the stage by Allen. The partnership continued on the big screen in films such as Sleeper, Love and Death, Interiors, Manhattan, and Manhattan Murder Mystery.

The partnership with Allen also included , the role that made Keaton a star, won her an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, and briefly made her a fashion icon. Keaton would receive three more Oscar nominations, two more BAFTA nods, and eight more Golden Globe nominations, winning the award again for 2003’s Something’s Got to Give.
Keaton also appeared in as the ultimately doomed schoolteacher Teresa Dunn in Looking For Mr. Goodbar, released, as Annie Hall was, in 1977.
Keaton continued to accumulate iconic roles as the 1980s rolled in, starting with 1981’s Reds and continuing with films such as Shoot the Moon, Mrs. Soffel, The Little Drummer Girl and Crime of the Heart. She found mainstream success with the hit Baby Boom.
Her commercial success continued into the 1990s in roles such as The First Wives Club and the Father of the Bride series. She also found time during the decade to star in small films such as Marvin’s Room.
As the new century rolled on, Keaton continued to have commercial success with the aforementioned Something’s Got to Give. She continued to act in high-profile parts over the the rest of her career in films such as The Family Stone, Because I Said So, Morning Glory, And So it Goes, and Book Club. Her final film was 2024’s Summer Camp, a comedy about three older women who reunite to try to rekindle their friendship with a summer camp experience.
